WORKS OF ART FROM THE DAVID AND ROSE ROWSE COLLECTION (LOTS 1-89) Christie’s is delighted to offer this remarkable collection of English Furniture, Old Master Paintings, Modern British Art and Antiquities, formed under the discerning eye of David Rowse. Born to the celebrated architect Herbert Rowse who designed the Mersey Tunnel, he had originally intended to follow in his father’s footsteps but after studies at King’s College, Cambridge and serving as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, he pursued a career in publishing. He founded firstly the magazine-publishing house Rowse Muir in 1949, followed by London Information in the early 1960s, a weekly publication which was the forerunner of the now-acclaimed Time Out magazine, and ended his career at the forefront of electronic publishing. He was always ahead of his time. Above everything, however, was his passion for collecting, whether it was the celebrated cabinet-makers of eighteenth-century England such as Benjamin Goodison and Thomas Chippendale, or his great passion for Antiquities and sculpture – he kept meticulous records, was always learning and was a recognisable figure, for many years, in the London salerooms, where many of these works of art were purchased. Not to be constrained by one area of connoisseurship, David, and his wife, the interior designer Rose Underdown’s collection is almost polymathic, covering all areas of artistic creation continuing to the present day with the fluid and vibrant Plazzotta bronze which took centre-stage in their London drawing room. David was also greatly interested in philately, on which he wrote three books, including a seminal work on the eponymous ‘Penny Black’ stamp and its so-called ‘Rainbow Trials’. Another passion, was sailing, which is represented not only in the maritime paintings, but also in the ship models which David collected. These works of art, chosen with care and cherished over the last thirty years represent David and Rose Rowse’s great interests and passions; portraiture, craftmanship and the classical world, resulting in a fusion of styles and eras, but with an overarching thread of the curious, the beautiful and the intriguing.
