Lot Essay

These chairs' trellis-fretted and quatrefoil-pierced back relates to a 'Gothick' pattern in R. Manwaring's The Chair-maker's Friend, 1765 (pl. 13). An example of very similar design to the present lot, with tapering legs and square block feet, from the collection of the Earl of Mansfield at Scone Palace, is illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, pl. 137.

For a pair with mahogany seats see Christie's, London, 13 September 2008, lot 166 (£13,750, including premium).

Sir Stuart Montagu Samuel, 1st Baronet (1856-1926) was a British banker and politican who served as Member of Parliament for Whitechapel from 1900-1916.
