The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This bureau plat or desk is in good overall condition.
It has been cleaned and repolished at sometime and is now a little faded, slightly more faded to the front than elsewhere and slightly more to the right-hand end of the front as visible in the illustration.
The drawer fronts with filled pin holes flanking the keyholes suggesting that there were probably previously (but not originally) handles to the drawers, the marks are minimal and not obtrusive.
The feet with brass caps, probably previously with castors.
The leather replaced and with some marking and wear from use, the leather linings to the slides to the ends apparently of similar age but with different (although similar) tooling. The locks replaced.
There are tiny filled holes to the border of the top also, suggesting that there may have been a three-quarter brass gallery at some time, but this is not conclusive and there is no fading line.
Minor chips, cracks, losses and repairs to the edge veneers.
There is minor shrinkage cracking, movement and wear throughout as well as the minor knocks, chips and scratches expected with use.
This substantial desk is structurally sound and in generally good usable overall condition.
