Lot Essay

Pliny the Elder named Sosus of Pergamon as the artist who created the 2nd century BC Greek original, now lost, from which the Roman example formerly in Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli, now in the Capitoline Museum, discovered in 1737, that depicts four doves in various attitudes about a golden bowl is believed to have been copied.
