The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
These bonheurs du jour are in good overall condition. Whilst there are minor differences they are generally well matched in colour, proportion, design, age and overall appearance.
They have been cleaned and repolished at some time and are now a little faded with the expected old chips and repairs to the edges as well as the anticipated slight movement, shrinkage and cracking throughout.
Both with similar 20th century replacement gilt-tooled green-leather linings to the hinged writing surfaces, the leathers with some wear and splitting along the hinge line.
The handles have been replaced to both in simulated ivory, copying the pattern of the handles previously installed.
One with replaced/later undertier as stated in the cataloguing text– this is to the example without the brass beading to the drawers.
The gilt lacquered brass mounts to each a little worn and tarnished.
The legs are a little darker to one example and the gilding to the timbers of both has been redone at some point in the later 20thcentury and is bright.
One with slight, polished out watermarking to the lower shelf of the superstructure.
Overall minor marks, scratches and wear consistent with age and use.
Both structurally sound and in good usable overall condition.
