Lot Essay

This elegant depiction of the revered Buddhist teacher and founder of the Gelukpa sect, Tsongkhapa, is beautifully rendered with vibrant pigments and gold. The composition was created from a block print composition disseminated throughout Central Tibet. The full set of Tashi Lhunpo woodblock prints published in Himalayan Art Resource provide identification for this thangka, as third of a fifteen-painting series. The woodblock print series is discussed by Guiseppe Tucci in Tibetan Painted Scrolls, Volume 1, Rome, 1945, p. 418.
