A Hillerich & Bradsby, Pre Model number bat dating from the 1925-28 labeling period with the signature Wm (Bill) Terry emblazoned upon the barrel. Exhibits heavy use with a slight handle crack, a small chip on the knob, and checking from repeated ball contact on the front and back barrel that has been repaired with finishing nails. Also exhibits ball marks, green bat rack streaks and vintage gripping substance on the handle. The remnants of a shipping label are visible on the barrel. Additionally the bat also shows evidence of having been factory side written in grease pencil 40oz Jim.Bottomley 7-30-28. During the first half of the 20th Century, it was commonplace for players to send a preferred model bat back to the factory to request models of the same type. Once at the factory, it would be planed and inscribed with the length, weight, player’s name, date received and team affiliation. A unique bat in that it was undoubtedly acquired by Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley from fellow future Hall of Famer Bill Terry, at some point during 1928, a season in which he won the National League Most Valuable Player Award. Authenticated and graded by PSA/DNA GU 9.
