Original lemon peel baseball recovered from the battlefield at Shiloh, Tennessee in 1862. Inscribed on the baseball is Picked Up on the Battle Field at Shilo by G.F. Hellem. According to research conducted by The National Pastime Museum, Hellem was an African-American orderly with the Army who later enlisted with the 69th United States Colored Infantry based in Arkansas and Tennessee. The antique baseball features supple leather with some instances of cracking and tight figure eight stitching. Overall Good condition.
