A Spalding, Model #200 bat dating from the 1926-34 labeling period with the team name GRAYS emblazoned on the barrel. The bat shows evidence of heavy use with a crack on the back handle, some checking (grain swelling) from repeated ball contact on the right, left and back barrel and some heat damage. The bat also exhibits evidence of having been factory side written Jasper W__h_____n (Jasper Washington). During the first half of the 20th Century, it was commonplace for players to send a preferred model bat back to the factory to request models of the same type. Once at the factory, it would be planed and inscribed with the length, weight, player’s name, date received and team affiliation. Jasper “Jap” Washington (1896-1960) played for the Homestead Grays from 1926-33 during the labeling period of the offered bat. Authenticated by PSA/DNA.
