Aristide Maillol’s primary subject throughout his career was the female form, often in the form of large bronze sculptures of women in states of repose. This woodcut dates from early in his career, when he used his wife Clotilde as his first nude model. The stylized waves of water and the medium of the woodcut are evidence of the influence of Japanse prints on Maillol's work.
