Lot Essay

The infant of the title is Vuillard's niece, born to his sister Marie who, in 1893 had married his friend, and fellow artist Ker-Xavier Roussel. The final state of this print was to have been printed in an edition of 100 for an album planned by Vollard, but the album was never published. This lot is an example of the second state, before the reduction of the size of the image, and before the addition of red to the wine bottle. Vuillard also changed of the pattern on the eiderdown from pink to red.
