Lot Essay

The portfolio Ten Prints by Ten Artists was first published in 1965 as an important collector’s item, and celebrated the work of ten established and rising figures in the contemporary art scene. Included in the portfolio are ten screenprints by Stuart Davis, Robert Motherwell, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Larry Poons, George Ortman, Ad Reinhardt, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Ellsworth Kelly. The portfolio was arranged and published by Samuel J. Wagstaff, Jr., then a curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum, but best known as the benefactor and partner of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. With the exception of Stuart Davis who died shortly before the portfolio’s publication, the ten contributions highlight the variety of work being produced by young and mid-career American artists in the 1960s.
