Lot Essay

A former student of Peter Doig, Chris Ofili and Bruce Mclean, London-based painter Annabel Emson explores the liminal space between abstraction and figuration, drawing heavily on her personal experience. Conceiving her works as a living extension of herself, she explore ideas surrounding memory and the body, seeking to visualise ephemeral sensations and emotions lodged in her psyche. Heaven (2006) demonstrates her fluid command of paint, combining detailed, semi-figurative passages with abstract washes of colour. The result conjures the feeling of imagining an unknown place, where hints of known reality shift in and out of focus. Trained at Chelsea College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, Emson has exhibited across London, Europe and America.
