Lot Essay

With its kaleidoscopic scene of futile decadence, the present work is a thrilling example of Dasha Shishkin’s fantastical multi-media language. Best known for her large-scale works on transparent Mylar, she weaves together imaginary narratives and characters, eloquently combining the comedic with the grotesque. Capturing a rich tapestry of human activity, her compositions have been compared to those of Breughel and Goya, while her figures conjure Japanese woodblock prints and the drawings of Egon Schiele. Born in Moscow, and now based in New York, Shishkin sprung to prominence after featuring in the group show Greater New York at P.S.1 in 2005. The present work was included in the Saatchi Gallery’s exhibition Gaiety is the Most Outstanding Feature of the Soviet Union in 2012, and she has since mounted solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Her works are held in public collections including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
