Lot Essay

Offering just mere glimpses of her subjects, Dee Ferris’s ethereal paintings are contemporary interpretations of that most noble of genres: the landscape. In the monumental This England, Ferris embraces the Romanticism usually associated with English landscape painting in her depiction of a group of white horses emerging from pearlescent mists. At the same time, she conjures a sense of melodrama in the drips and splatters that populate passages across the surface of the canvas. Rather than shunning what might be dismissed as the frivolity of earlier landscape painters such as Fragonnard and Watteau, Ferris’s delicate, ghostly paintings pay tribute to the emotional and heartfelt longing that inspired her forebears. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including Tate Britain, Nottingham Contemporary, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Bordeaux and the MARRES Centre for Contemporary Culture, Maastricht.
