Lot Essay

From ‘Hot 100’ charts listing favourite artists to busy abstractions and baffling flow charts, Peter Davies’ playful works demonstrate his vibrant, colourful approach to conceptual art. Combining text with formal abstraction, striking palettes and monumental scale, his works ape the stereotypes of high modernism, infusing them with whimsy and irreverence. The Redundancy of Ideology (2008) splices imagery drawn from pop culture and art history with religious iconography and advertising slogans, making redundant their original message and purpose. Born in Scotland, and now based in London, Davies was included in Charles Saatchi’s landmark exhibition Sensation at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1997, shortly after his graduation from Goldsmiths College. He has since exhibited widely, with works held in institutional collections including Tate, London and the British Council Collection.
