拍品專文

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia and based in Vienna until her untimely death in 2016, Tamuna Sirbiladze is celebrated for her vast, expressionistic canvases that fluctuate between figuration and abstraction. Capturing her fascination with representations of the female form, her Maps series depicts anonymous women engaged in various carnal and sexual exploits, rendered with visceral, sensual brushwork. As a child in the Soviet Union, with no access to museums, Sirbiladze found inspiration in reproductions of works by Rembrandt, Goya and the Impressionists. Later, she was deeply influenced by the subversive spirit of the Viennese Actionists, including Otto Mühl and Hermann Nitsch. Throughout her career, Sirbiladze also explored drawing, collage and video art, as well as collaborating with other artists including her husband Franz West. Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe and America, notably featuring in the Rubell Family Collection’s 2016 touring show No Man’s Land in Miami and at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D. C.
