Lot Essay
Born in Beijing and raised in Canada, Terence Koh is a multi-media conceptual artist whose work explores themes relating to sexuality, politics and identity. Coming to prominence in the early 2000s under the pseudonym ‘asianpunkboy’, he has forged an interdisciplinary practice combining poetry, performance, wall pieces and installation, as well as a YouTube channel featuring guests such as Marina Abramović, Ai Weiwei and Lady Gaga. Frequently provocative, his works combine allusions to art history, mythology, fashion and urban subculture. Executed in 2006, and included in the Saatchi exhibition USA Today at the Royal Academy of Arts that year, Big White Cock is a neon sculpture based on the marquee signage outside a gay bar in Manhattan’s East Village. Koh has mounted solo shows at institutions including the Kunsthalle Zurich, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. His works are held in major public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate, London.
