The stalagmiticforms of red, orange, white and pink pulsating throughout Aaron Wexler’s Make Like the Sun guide the viewer’s eyes rhythmically across the picture plane. Heightened by the lack of focal point, and the interplay of positive and negative space, Wexler’s cadenced abstract composition exemplifies his poetic explorations of line, form and colour. As the artist explains, ‘I liken my work to puzzles that are always unsolved, always concealing and revealing, loud and soft.’ Based in New York City, Wexler is inspired by the abstraction he finds in the environment around him, as well as within books, photographs and prints. Make Like the Sun demonstrates his complex visual response to these sources: ‘they become cut and paste blueprints from which I build my surface layers on the picture plane’, he asserts. Wexler’s work was included in the Saatchi Gallery’s 2009 exhibition Abstract America, alongside other artists including Kristin Baker, Mark Bradford and Jonas Wood.
