Lot Essay

Transposing her expressionistic, complex and bold style of painting to woven textile, Dana Schutz epitomises in Tapestry the powerful effect of her work, which traverses the border between tradition and innovation. A master of the use of colour to create form, Schutz fractures bold medleys of dissonant tone into flat shapes to create a dream-like composition which recalls the uncanny of Surrealism. The kaleidoscopic palette fashions a decidedly retro, 1970s feel, underscored by the tapestry’s woollen texture: acid greens encounter burnt orange, deep blue and fuchsia to render a tableau that is as delightfully kitsch and awkward as the gawky musician subject at its centre. Immediately memorable, the figure’s vivid characterisation harmonises with the eerily fantastical elements of her surroundings – the keyboard keys have morphed into fingers, a face emerges from the music stand, the room dissolves into a forest in the background, and a mallet in the foreground shatters the floor into a mosaic – showcasing the artist’s satirical wit and deft compositional invention. Schutz emerged into the contemporary art scene following her graduation from Columbia’s prestigious MFA programme, and has since featured in solo and group exhibitions in the US and internationally, including ‘Body Language’ at Saatchi Gallery (2014). Her works can be viewed in a host of globally renowned collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Arts, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
