Lot Essay

John Ford Clymer was widely recognized for his portrayals of the American frontier and his interest in the lives of trappers, traders, and explorers. In this scene, he draws upon the clothing, transportation, and tools associated with the fur trade era, reconstructing the nineteenth-century West with a strong sense of historical detail and lived experience.

In Break Up, Clymer depicts three trappers beginning their journey down the Yellowstone River as the spring thaw makes crossing possible once again. The men navigate hand-hewn dugout canoes stacked with pressed furs bound for a trading post, while additional hides are pulled behind in two bull boats made from buffalo hide. The fractured ice, pale winter light, and sweeping mountains in the distance heighten the sense of transition and endurance that defined frontier travel and commerce.
