According to Barbara Kramer, researcher and author of Nampeyo and Her Pottery, the work depicts Annie Healing (Heli), daughter of the renowned Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo. Like her mother, Annie was also a potter; the earliest piece directly attributed to her was a 1912 jar in Leigh's collection, currently in the Gilcrease Museum collection.
