MELVILLE, Herman (1819-1891). Autograph letter signed ("Herman Melville") to "My Dear Upton", [n.p.] 29 May [no year, c. late 1840s].

Two pages, bifolium, 158 x 99mm (mounting remnants on verso, mild toning at extreme margins, slight separation at top of spine fold). Blue cloth chemise and slipcase.

A note of thanks to an admirer of his second novel. “I was very much gratified by your note & its friendly spirit & cordiality. I am much pleased that you Omoo has afforded you entertainment — the more so, as without flatter I might instance yourself as being in 'those quarters where praise is desirable.' I presume that before this you are quite at home in your new residence up town, where I promise myself great pleasure in calling upon you when next in New York. I beg you to present my compliments to Mrs. Upton….” Not published in Horth.
