Allan Melvilles copy, gifted to A.L. Shepherd. “A.Melville” is inscribed on the front pastedown, and Shepherd's record is on the first endpaper: “A.L.Shepherd U.S. Army / Presented by his friend Allan Melville. May 9, 1858.” Augustus Longstreet was a Yale alum who originally hailed from Augusta. Georgia Scenes, first published in 1835, is based on his youthful memories of frontier Georgia at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Octavo. 12 plates. Original cloth (faded, chip to head of spine, rubbing to extremities). Custom clamshell box. Provenance: Allan Melville (inscription; gifted to:) – A.L. Shepherd (ownership inscription) – H.A.H. (inscription to front endpaper).
