    First edition, an unrecorded remainder issue with cancel titles, perhaps bound for a circulating library. While it was not uncommon for Richard Bentley to take unsold first edition sheets and issue them later with a cancel title in a single volume—this was done for Redburn, White Jacket, and The Whale—BAL makes no note of this for Mardi, nor does ABPC or RBH have any records. Cf. BAL 13657.

    Octavo (180 x 110mm). 3 volumes. No half titles, cancel titles dated 1851. 19th century quarter black over burgundy cloth, red spine labels stamped in gilt (some rubbing overall, creasing to spines).
