MELVILLE, Herman (1819-1891). Redburn. London: Richard Bentley, 1853.

The remainder issue. In his article “Collecting Melville,” Reese notes that “Richard Bentley, Melville's publisher for Redburn, Mardi, White Jacket and The Whale, refused to have anything to do with Pierre, and in 1853 remaindered all four, binding up the sheets in single volumes in cheap red cloth with cancel titles.” The present copy is one such example; see also the following lot for a second remainder copy of Redburn in a variant red cloth binding. BAL 13659 (note).

Thick octavo (200 x 115mm). Half title preceding second volume. Original red cloth stamped in gilt, type on spine measuring 8mm for the title and 6mm for the author, covers decorated in blind (rebacked with original spine laid down, short closed tear through “Melville” on spine).
