TYPEE – Group of seven volumes. London & New York: various publishers, 1847-1876.

‌‌Melville issued changes to Typee until his death and different versions show his increased sympathy for the people (using “native” or “islander” instead of savage) and his attempt at understanding the Polynesian language. Comprises:

1. Modern Painters. New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1847. Original brown cloth (spine chipped). There is a 10-page publishers’ advertisement at the end devoted to the newly revised edition of Typee, quoting extensively from reviews (unopened).
2. MELVILLE, Herman (1819-1891). Typee; or, A Narrative of a Four MonthsResidence in the Valley of the Marquesas; or a Peep at Polynesian Life. London: John Murray, 1847. Original red cloth (rebacked with original spine laid down).
3. Typee; or a Residence in the Marquesas. London: H.J. Gibbs, 1850. Original boards (well-worn, clumsy repair). “The Only Unabridged Cheap Edition.” A somewhat puzzling cheap edition, possibly permitted by Murray (who still held the copyright) for marketing in railway stations. Custom chemise and slipcase.
4. Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life, during a Four MonthsResidence in the Valley of the Marquesas. The revised edition, with a sequel. New York: Harper & Bros., 1849. Original light green cloth (spine sunned, tips rubbed).
5. Another copy. Original dark green cloth (minor fraying to spine ends/corners).
6. Typee. New York: Harper & Bros., 1857. Original brown cloth (two repaired tears at spine, lower joint chipped).
7. Typee. New York: Harper & Bros., 1876. Original cloth (ex-library with markings but generally bright). Last lifetime edition.
