Hufnagel notation
A leaf from a Gradual, in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Germany, mid-14th century]
A fine example of Hufnagel notation.

c.365 x 285mm, 2 columns of 8 lines written in black ink in a formal Gothic bookhand, rubrics and initials in red, 13 lines of Hufnagel notation on a 4-line staff in black, yellow and red, with C- and F-clefs (darkened and stained from use as binding material, a few holes). Bound in grey buckram in 2005 by Celia Alberman.

The text is from the Common of Martyrs, Confessors and Virgins, beginning: 'Et crucem tunc turpem cottidie baiularunt' and ending: 'Et regium festinanter adornate tha[lamum].'
