St Gall neumes (Early German neumes)
Fragments from an Antiphonal, in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Southern Germany, mid-11th century]
Four fragments from a handsome Carolingian Antiphonal with St Gall neumes.

2 leaves and 2 fragments: (i) c.195 x 150mm; (ii) 155 x 145mm; (iii) c.250 x 200mm; (iv) c.235 x 185mm; up to 25 lines written in brown ink in a late Carolingian minuscule, staffless diastematic (heightened) St Gall neumes (Early German neumes) above lines with marginal musical cues, initials in red (all recovered from bindings and consequently creased, stained, some parts of text faded, remnants of adhesive, some holes and wormholes). Bound in grey buckram at the Quaritch bindery.

Text:
The text of the fragments includes: (i) the end of the Common of One Confessor and the Common of several Virgins, from: 'Magna est gloria eius' to 'Quia ipse est deus tuus [et adorabunt eum]'; (ii) the Common of One Confessor, from '[Dominus qui elegit te] ipse te coronavit corona iusticie via enim domini [...] to 'Domine quinque talenta tradidisti'; (iii) the Common of Several Martyrs: '[Et glo]riamini omnes recti corde' to 'Mirabilis deus in sanctis suis'; (iv) the end of the Office of St Benedict and the beginning of the Office of St Benedict, from: 'Memor esto congregationis' to 'Nutrici in auxilium [grande fecit miraculum primum]'.
