Lot Essay

Fields of Rest is an example of French artist Cyprien Gaillard’s exploration into the relationship between nature and architecture. Employing his signature minimalist aesthetic, this work features a Polaroid image of palm leaves presented within a lavish multi-layered mount. Gaillard purposefully chose the Polaroid medium for the freedom it allows him to escape the confines of his studio. This pedestrian style of photography is then countered with the museum-like quality of framing creating a juxtaposition that is so often seen in Gaillard’s work. By contextualizing the image of nature within the architectural boundaries of the frame, Gaillard creates a dialogue between the wild and the controlled.
