Lot Essay
Gertrude Abercrombie’s depiction of an alternative, dream-like reality is evocative of the Italian pittura metafisica (metaphysical painting) of artist's such as Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà. In discussing her surrealist imagery, she said, “It is always myself that I paint.” In the present lot, the lone figure in the landscape stands in profile, gazing out at the gloomy horizon. It can be assumed that the individual is Abercrombie herself, lending this piece to be a sort of psychic self-portrait. As such, this portrayal demonstrates the inner landscape of anxiety, fear and loneliness, which riddled much of her life.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
A fine layer of dust is visible overall. The Masonite is slightly irregular in shape, presumably in keeping with the artist's choice of support. A few pinpoint losses of Masonite and faint frame impressions are visible occasionally to the edges outside its frame. Under ultraviolet light, a few pinpoint spots of inpainting are visible to the corners and near the center lower edge.
