Lot Essay

Exploring themes such as the environment where she lives, works and travels, Jennifer Bartlett has achieved major success in American contemporary painting. Her subject matter often explores the everyday—trees in a garden, a house, the ocean, however Bartlett structures them in ways to give them profound senses of meaning. In At Sands Point #36, the artist imbues the canvas with differing hues of blues, playing with the notion of reflection and light on the water. In the center of the composition, a simple white rowboat is overturned, giving the painting a mysterious and subtly haunting feeling.
