Lot Essay

The present lot is from a series of paintings by Chicago-based artist, Paul Cowan, that examines our human ability of parallel processing - the brain's processing of color, motion, shape and depth. The blue Chroma-key paint creates a perfectly smooth finish, which is then disrupted by three straight strokes in white that seem to both hover on the painting's surface, but also create a momentary sense of depth. Beyond the composition, the work's title, BCUASEE THE SKY IS BULE, plays on the research that proves reorganizing the letters in the middle of a word has little effect on its legibility, as long as the first and last letters are in the correct position.
