Lot Essay

As a founding member of Gutai, the most radical artistic movement in post-war Japan, Shozo Shimamoto is celebrated for his groundbreaking and experimental action paintings which challenged artistic norms and brought movement and performance to the painted surface. From his renowned Bottle Crash series, the present lot, executed in 2009, is reminiscent of the revered drip paintings of his Western contemporary Jackson Pollock, and perfectly encapsulates Shimamoto’s vision in the Japanese avant-garde; the process is as important as the finished product.
