Since the 1980s, German-painter Volker Tannert has fluctuated between pathos-filled landscapes and figurative scenes. Inspired by the moody and sublime paintings of Casper David Friedrich, Tannert's landscapes, such as the present lot, rich in darkly-hued scumbling, are romantic and mysterious visions of a seemingly historic past.
