Lot Essay

500 copies of this calendar were commissioned by the Pacific Transport Lines for distribution in the United States. It is known that Hasui did not usually undertake this type of work, but that it seems that he became quite absorbed in the project, striving to portray a true sense of the Japanese landscape. See Kendall H Brown, Kawase Hasui - The Complete Woodblock Prints, (The Netherlands, 2003), p. 131
