Lot Essay

This is the most famous book of well-known places in Edo. The places would have been instantly recognisable to the contemporary viewer and are genearlly depicted at the time of year, or the festival occasion, commonly associated with them. For example the ideal day for seeing the Yoshiwara was on the first day of August when the courtesans paraded in white kimono and this scene is depicted in volume 2.
