Lot Essay

This book was a collaboration between the artist Hokusai and the author Baikin and forms part of the literary tradition of yomihon [reading books] which were popular by the early 1800. The first part was published in 1805, the second in 1807, with the set of ninety volumes being finally completed in 1838. The text is an adaptation of what is considered one of the greatest Chinese historical tales. The story involves a group of one hundred and eight brigands who worked against corrupt rulers in the 12th century and is an onslaught of combat, assassination, torture, abduction and supernatural events.
