Lot Essay

This design depicts the invasion of Korea by Kato Kiyomasa (Masakiyo) (1562-1611), however it has been suggested that it could be a veiled reference to a contemporary incident where the English bombed Kagoshima harbour in retaliation for the murder of the English merchant Charles Lennox Richardson (1834-62), in 1862.

For another impression, see Isao Toshihiko, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi no Sekai [The World of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi], (Tokyo, 2010), p.42-43, no.28.
