Lot Essay

This set was started by Eisen and published by Hoeido in 1835, however in 1837 Hiroshige took over the project, working with the publisher Iseiri (Kinjudo).

This famous design clearly shows the uncomfortable conditions that travellers could encounter on these long journeys. Here, four travellers are shown trudging through snow on the road between the stations of Oi and Okute, their heads bowed as they brace themselves against the cold.
