拍品專文

This rare border panel is the earliest shawl fragment in the present sale. The distinctive row of boteh motifs composed of flowers vividly recalls the aesthetic of the Mughal court in the 17th century. Similarly elegant clusters of blossoms issuing from a single stem occur in the borders of miniature paintings and carpets from this period. See, for example, the border of a woollen rug dating from the reign of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, circa 1650, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (acc. 14.40.725). For a similar frieze of densely floral boteh motifs see Lot 14 in the sale.
