Lot Essay

This early dochalla is decorated with three rows of small and delicate boteh designs on the palla. The boteh design, known as paisley in the West is the most dominant and widely used motif used on shawls. The design developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth century in Mughal India and can be seen in all mediums such as textiles, painting, architecture and sculpture. In shawls, the motif became increasingly stylized throughout the years, as seen on other late eighteenth and early nineteenth century examples in the sale. For other comparable shawls in the present sale, see lots 52, 54 and 59.
