Lot Essay
This early dochalla is decorated with three rows of small and delicate boteh designs on the palla. The boteh design, known as paisley in the West is the most dominant and widely used motif used on shawls. The design developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth century in Mughal India and can be seen in all mediums such as textiles, painting, architecture and sculpture. In shawls, the motif became increasingly stylized throughout the years, as seen on other late eighteenth and early nineteenth century examples in the sale. For other comparable shawls in the present sale, see lots 52, 54 and 59.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Extremely fine indigo pashmina field with old darning only visible when held against the light. The palla (borders) are very harmonious, hashiya (marginal borders) are a little bit rubbed. New piece of blue pashmina on each end, possibly cut from the field as one palla is sewn onto the field, the other woven continuously. The size of the shawl is slightly smaller than expected, so it has probably been reduced. A few scattered stains to field and borders.
