Lot Essay

The inscription is a reference to the Hindu deity Shiva. A finely woven example, it probably belonged to a rich Shaivite devotee, to be worn during ritual worship. There is a comparable early 19th century example with the same repetitive inscription in the National Museum, New Delhi (acc. no. 59.396). Another 19th century namaval shawl with a devanagari inscription is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), acc. no. 62.42.2.
