Lot Essay

The inscription is a reference to the Hindu deity Shiva. A finely woven example, it probably belonged to a rich Shaivite devotee, to be worn during ritual worship. There is a comparable early 19th century example with the same repetitive inscription in the National Museum, New Delhi (acc. no. 59.396). Another 19th century shawl with ainscription is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), acc. no. 62.42.2.
