The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Deccani procession:
Under UV light, it is clearly visible that the green background is overpainted. However, all figures and the elephants have been left as originally painted. There are some scattered areas of retouching on the skirts of the white jamas of the figures along the bottom edge. Some of the camels' necks and details of their face are retouched. The elephant is in good condition, although the silver used to paint the embroidered saddle rug is flaked. The figure of the rpince is in good condition. The turban and face of the attendant holding the cloth behind him are retouched. The turban of the attendant before him holding the ankus is very slightly retouched.
The man with a gold turban holding one of the two flags has a retouched face and arm. On the 11 figures, seven have intact faces, the other four have light repainting.
The painting is extended at top (all the area above the parasols). There is some rubbing to the green ground, light flaking along the borders. There is a fold mark in the top left corner. The page has lost part of its margins, particularly along the right edge. The top margin is fragile and this painting should be manipulated with care.
Shah Jahan in procession:
There are scattered patches of repainting on the green ground which strongly shows as yellow under UV light. The figures also have a number of small areas of repainting in places. The elephants have remained in good condition. The painting is extended at top, from the tip of the gold canopy above Shah Jahan. The margins have old creases and folding marks.
