Lot Essay

The style and composition of the present painting owes much to a famous illustration of the second Akbarnama, attributed to Manshar and dated to circa 1604. See Milo Cleveland beach, The Imperial Image, Paintings for the Mughal Court, Washington 1981, cat. 12g, pp.116-119.
