Born as Abdul Aziz in Kolhapur (Central India), the artist Abalal Rahiman came from a family skilled in manuscript illumination. Aware of his artistic skills, the Maharaja of Kolhapur, at the request of the British Resident, paid for Rahiman to study at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay. On his return to Kolhapur, Rahiman worked as a court painter for the Maharaja.
