As Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior had not named an heir, at his death a boy named Mugat Rao from another branch of the family was adopted, renamed Jankoji Rao Scindia and became his successor. He reigned under the regency of Maharani Baiza Bai, the widow of Daulat Rao, until he came of age.
