Opaque pigments on paper, within an oval medallion, with light green spandrels, wearing an orange turban with polychrome lozenges and a large pearl necklace, inscription in black devanagari script to lower left 'Raja Ram Singh', the reverse with identification in blue ink and other notes in pencil and ink

This portrait of Sawai Ram Singh II is based on a photograph from the ‘Album of cartes de visite portraits of Indian rulers and notables’ by Bourne and Shepherd, circa 1870s. (See British Library, photo 127/ (8)). He was created a Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India in 1877. He was also created a Counsellor of the Empress in 1877 and a Knight Grand Commander of India in 1880. Ram Singh II’s accomplishments include vast improvements in public utilities, irrigation and education in Jaipur. He also had a passion for photography and set up a tasveer khana in Jaipur with the assistance of the British photographer T. Murray.
